1. Double-click My Computer.

2. Double-click Control Panel.

3. Open Modems by double clicking the Modems icon.

4. Your Modem will be listed on the Modem Properties
window. Click on your listed modem so it becomes highlighted then click
the Properties button.

5. On the General Tab of your Modems Properties window
it should show what Communications Port your modem is installed on (ex:
COM1). Maximum Speed on a 56k modem is by default set to 115200.

6. Click on the Connection tab along the top of the
Modem Properties window. The Connection preferences should be set to Data
bits: 8, Parity: None and Stop bits: 1.

7. Click the Port Settings button on the bottom left.
An Advanced Port Settings Window Should appear. By default the Receive
Buffer should be set to the 3/4th's mark towards the High end and the
Transmit Buffer should be set to the 4/4th's mark towards the High end.
To reset these options, click the Defaults button. Click OK.

8. On the Modems Properties Connection tab, click the
Advanced button on the bottom right. An Advanced Connection Settings window
should appear. Extra settings is where Initialization Strings should be
entered.

9. From the main Modem Properties window click the Dialing
Properties button. The Dialing Properties window should appear. Make sure
the correct area code is in the Area Code field. If you have call waiting
on your phone line, check the To disable call waiting option and enter
*70, into the text field to the right.

10. Click Area Code Rules to examine your current Area
Code Rules settings.

11. Click Ok when you've made any necessary changes
to Area Code Rules. Click Apply to save any changes made to Dialing Properties.
Click Ok to close the Modem Properties Settings window and Close to close
the Main Modem Properties window.
